A RETURN TO THE GOLDEN AGE
Standing apart from Parko’s all-time favourite boards, the original Golden Child became Joel’s new number one after the original Forget Me Not was damaged in the perfect waves of Kirra during the 2009 Quiksilver Pro semi-finals. His first heat on the Golden Child was the final, and after winning that contest, Joel went on to become champion at Bells and JBay as well.
Whenever conditions suited that year, the Golden Child came out, and the result was always the same: Joel never lost a heat. It was eventually placed directly on our Kirra factory wall as a trophy, representing the pinnacle of fast, intuitive, and powerful surfing. The Golden Child is based on the original 2009 model, but with modern 2024 influences on the deck roll and rails. It rides approximately 1 to 2 inches longer than a classic shortboard, and the same width or 1/8” narrower.
Overall, it features a flatter vee deck compared to the domed deck of our modern good-wave boards like the Schooner or FMN3. This brings the surfer closer to the water for increased sensitivity and instant response. The Golden Child also has less concave than the Monsta for more hold, complemented by a narrower nose and tail for control in critical sections. All these elements combine to create a model designed for rail surfing, to cut through the water like a hot knife through butter.
